Mythical Creatures

October-November 2020 | New England Botanic Garden

Mythical Creatures was an exhibit created to engage families with young children. As the Exhibitions Coordinator, I was tasked with creating mythical creatures that tied into the New England Botanic Garden’s mission of inspiring curiosity about habitats, wildlife, and plants.

Scope of Work

  • Designed and fabricated nine creature sculptures

  • Wrote and designed interpretative outdoor signs

  • Led a team of staff in installation of exhibit

Interpretation

The interpretive signage was written and designed to appeal to families with young children. Creating fictional creatures allowed the viewers to expand their imagination while learning the different features of the creatures. Even though these creatures were fictional, they all had attributes of real creatures including their habitats, behaviors, diets, and temperaments.

Behind the Scenes

Each sign included an illustration drawn by hand. These illustrations were used in marketing the exhibit as well. I took inspiration from biologists’ journals.

Some creatures had to be built with special needs in mind. The Kraken tentacle had to be completely waterproof because it was going to live in a misting-fountain.
